There are goats on the bus, going places today. During the bus ride from Kathmandu to Pokhara to hike the ABC, I saw them riding on top of all the other buses.
I can hear them clomping around on top of ours.
At first I couldn’t figure out why everyone was traveling with a goat. But as we got out of town, it started to make more sense.
Goats on top of the bus.
When we got out of Kathmandu, I saw saw so many goats being butchered on the side of the road I lost count.
I even saw a toddler playing with the head of a goat in the grass! He was swinging it around by the horns.
What the heck was going on?
Later I found out they were being butchered for Dashain.
Dashain is a huge holy holiday in Nepal and India. It’s celebrated by both Hindus and Buddhists, but for different reasons.
The focus of both groups seems to be visiting family and community events where I’m guessing they will be eating a lot of goat meat.
