My shoes are not broken!
I think the weirdest scam in Vietnam is the fake shoe repair. All the tourists wear flip flops which tend to fall apart at some point. So, a Vietnamese person will keenly spot a tear or break in your flip flop. He will act extremely concerned and point to it worriedly saying, “is broken!” Then he will magically happen to have superglue on him and will kindly glue the shoe for you. Next, he will demand an exorbitant price for this act of kindness.
Unlike the doughnuts, I was able to avoid this one right from the start but I keep getting targeted although my flip flops are in pristine condition. I’ve resorted to scampering around their pointed fingers and concerned looks and just exclaiming, “My shoe is not broken!”
