The Great Wall of China

Today was one of those days where I couldn’t believe I get to live this life and have these experiences. I just felt so grateful and so lucky. I got to visit the Great Wall and it was incredible.

It’s funny because it feels like such an accomplishment. But really, it was such a simple thing to do. I booked a ticket to China, got on the plane, had my hostel book the tour, gave them $56 and got to spend the day at a relatively uncrowded section of the wall.

None of it required speaking any Chinese and really, China has been very comfortable to travel so far. But for the way I feel you’d think I conquered China and won the lottery in the same day. It was every bit as amazing as I thought it would be.

If you are going to visit the Great Wall, I suggest you visit the Jinshanling section of the wall.  It’s less touristy and more authentic than some other sections which have been totally rebuilt.  I got to have sections of the wall to myself today and hiked from tower to tower without crowds. You can book far in advance if you are there during a high tourist season, but in September, it wasn’t necessary.  There will most likely be smog so keep that in mind with photos. Tours usually include a bus pickup from your hotel or hostel, breakfast, park entry and transport back in the afternoon.

The fall may be ideal since it’s cool, quiet and less crowded.
